19 Before 2019 – Did you Finish Strong?

 

Did you finish strong? I was bold like other bullet journal junkies and made a list of 19 Before 2019 a list of goals to finish strong.  I’m not sure what I was thinking when I made my list. It was a big lofty list of things to accomplish. In fact a few days later I was talking to my mom and said: “What was I thinking when I created this list?” She thought the same thing. Like Mother like daughter right?

MAKING EXCUSES

I didn’t set goals for myself at the beginning of last year because I’m an excellent starter and a horrible finisher. Do you make similar excuses? I’ve gotten really good at it. However, with three months left in 2018, I decided to try something new. I wanted to finish strong. Are you like me in that you tend to stick with a plan for everyone and everything except for yourself.  To be honest I’m tired of giving up on myself.

Many of you are curious to find out how I did and whether I will attempt goal setting this year. Well, I have to pat myself on the back. I’m so excited that I got as far as I did. And YES you’re going to see lots of progress in the direction of goal setting this year. We’ll talk about that in a future post.

I looked at the list often. Almost daily. I tackled what I knew I could cross off quickly. There weren’t that many that didn’t involve a lot of time and energy. It helped to share my list with all of you. I wanted to be successful and brag about how I kicked it out every day but that was not the case.

FINISHING THINGS

As I have said before goal setting is not my strong suit. Even finishing things is not high on my list. In fact when I do complete something I’m super proud of myself. Don’t get me wrong I do finish things but many times I will make a list and not cross off a thing. I am pushing myself forward because I want to get better at completing tasks, projects, books, etc. I have made excuses long enough and now it’s time to change.

MY LIST

  • Finish reading Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis.  I enjoyed this book on so many levels. First, I love the style in which Rachel writes. I imagine she would be someone I’d like to hang out with. Second, she addresses the lies that hold so many women hostage including me. The titles to her chapters say it all. Here are a few that spoke to me. The Lie: I’ll start tomorrow. The Lie: I should be further along by now. The Lie: I will never get past this. The Lie: I need a drink. Have you ever said any one of those lies to yourself? I have. Only about a billion times. Finally I was so inspired I would like to write a book myself someday. Done!
  • Complete blogging course. Overall I’m pretty well done with this course. I have about a week of information left to devour and a couple things to implement and I can call it good. Mostly Done!
  • Read The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers. Dear friends if you have not read this book head to the library or Amazon and get your copy. It’s a page-turner. The way she brings her characters to life through their situations and heartaches makes you want to keep reading to see what happens next. In fact, I was more than halfway through reading before we got to PA for Thanksgiving. Done!

  • Plan a girls night with my PD girls. On New Year’s Day my ladies small group had a potluck, complete with balloons, party hats, puzzles, nail polish and a craft project of course. Everyone had a wonderful time kickin off the new year! Done on 1/1/19!
  • Sign Up for Audible. Wow there are so many choices! I will have to set aside time on purpose to listen. Do you buy the book as well so you can highlight as you go? That sounds like a win-win to me. Done 1/7/2019!
  • Plan a menu of dinners for a month. When my hubby’s parents visited we planned meals for a two-week span. It was a life saver. Not only did it help with the grocery shopping we weren’t standing around at 5 pm saying, “What’s for dinner?  Here’s the menu plan my friend uses that I was going to adopt. I definitely want to try it. Not Done!
  • Book flights to Munich. My PIC (aka Partner In Crime) is going on a business trip and we decided to go over a beforehand to take Germany by storm. So look out Germany flights have been booked.  Done!
  • Plan things to do in Munich and other neighboring countries. A great BIG thanks to my PIC for taking the lead on planning. All I had to do was say, yes, yes and yes! We are going to have such a blast. Now to research packing ideas. Done!
  • Brainstorm my blog posts and calendar it out for the rest of the year. When the holidays hit I didn’t do much planning to finish out the end of 2018 as far as the blog was concerned. However, 2019 is going to be fantastic inside the Intentional Pieces Blog. I gathered some dear friends and we spent 4 hours brainstorming ideas in the middle of December for next year. I’ve got BIG plans and I hope you’ll stick around. Done for 2019!

 

  • Create a youtube video and publish it.  Nope not even close. Not Done!
  • Take a 15-minute walk every day. From October to December I was random in my walking. This year I’m am moving on purpose when I’ve been sitting too long and getting back to the gym on the weekdays for at least 20-30 minutes. Done!
  • Organize fabric in bins. Phew, was this a big project! Finally, I sorted and stored all the fabric by color. It took a lot of work but I’m so glad it’s done. Now to keep in there. Done 1/5/19!

  • Go through home decor using the KonMari method. Nope didn’t get to this one either. Did you hear that Marie KonMari has her own show on Netflix? I watched the first episode and was inspired. I’m transferring this one over to 2019. Not Done!
  • Finish a quilt for my own personal use.  Ahh yes, I have a beautiful quilt that I made just for me. It was definitely a group effort thanks to my friend Pam who did the quilting and Sandy who did the binding. Here’s me snuggling on the couch. Isn’t it lovely? Done 1/6/19!

  • Create a blogging checklist for posting. A lot goes into blogging. Such as writing, attaching pictures, then designing. Posting to social media, adding links, and emailing your subscribers. I need a list so I don’t forget all the steps. Not Done!
  • Wash every light globe in our house. This was the easiest one on the list. It took all of about 40 minutes to complete. Why did I wait so long? Done!
  • Organize my craft closet. Didn’t even think of tackling this one. I got overwhelmed just looking at it. I’m afraid it will be on the 2019 list. Not Done!
  • Grow my email subscriber list to 100. I have some ideas up my sleeve for growing my subscriber list. It’s going to take some purposeful work and I’m up for the challenge. Stay tuned and share my blog with your friends because 2019 is going to be amazing! Not Done!
  • See a show or do something special with hubby for Christmas. My wonderful hubby surprised me with an impromptu date night. First a drive around the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights, next a coffee from Starbucks and a shopping trip to Costco (our local box store). I couldn’t have planned a better night together. Done!

FINAL RESULTS

Out of 19 goals set here’s the stats:

  • Done! 7
  • Mostly Done! – 1
  • Done in 2019! – 5
  • Not Done! – 6

Overall I’m so happy I made this list. If I hadn’t made the list at all I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. I’m most proud of the quilt I made for myself. The entire quilt has Y seams. Ask any quilter what that is like and she’ll probably say you might want to pick an easier pattern. But I did it and it’s beautiful!

I would totally do this exercise again.
